Hello Tumara,
I just purchased a home in Decatur last month. I'm up late researching summer camps in the area and somehow came upon your website. I think the concept is awesome. I am the mom of 2 boys ages 6 & 4. My husband and I have been in planning mode to find and buy a home in Decatur for the last 3 years, and boy are we glad to have reached the finish line. I am a teacher and Realtor, hoping to go back to doing real estate full time now that my boys are older and will be attending Decatur Schools. I am starting up my own real estate company to allow me the flexability to schedule around my children's school schedule. I was fortunate to be my own Real Estate Agent during our search, so having my children along was not a problem. However, this can be a challenge for many families when scheduling home showings. I hope find ways to make the process easier and more kid friendly for families. I'll definitely keep up with your blog to find and share info. as my Decatur adventures progress. Thanks Again!

Hello,
This might be a bit early, but I am currently 7 months pregnant, due in early June. We are expiring our options in the Decatur/Doraville/ Emory area for nanny shares as well as daycare. My husband works at Emory, and we live in the Doraville area near Chamblee Tucker. Our timeline is August/September. Any suggestions would be helpful. If it's a nanny share in Decatur, we would probably want the other person to host.

We are making the 3rd year montessori vs. public k decision now. We can't afford to keep our son in Montessori for elementary, so we will eventually be moving into public, but I can't decide if that should be this fall or next.

Our situation is that we're currently in a Montessori program that has been wonderful for him. He's 4, and academically, he's mastered most of the primary curriculum - he can read fluently, he sounds out words and writes, he can do addition, subtraction, fractions, and he's starting to learn multiplication. He knows more about geography than I do. But, socially, he is still very much a four year old - he's more concerned about himself than others, can be very silly and has trouble sitting still.

I talked to his montessori teacher and she thinks the third year of primary is particularly important for my child because he'll assume a role of responsibility in the classroom that she thinks would really help his social development. Right now there are 7 four year olds in his class, and I've talked to all but 2 of their parents, and so far they are all staying - so he'll also still have a good social group of 5 year olds there. In Montessori 3rd year he'll begin to move from concrete to abstract - so, from physical representations of math to pencil-and-paper-only math, which his teacher thinks is enough to ready him for public first. She is also very concerned that he'll be bored in public K (and he is definitely trouble when he's bored.)

Then there's our public school option. I talked to the K teachers and the K classroom uses a lot of manipulatives, and they have systems in place to help kids move at their own pace. They seem to be used to dealing with kids who come in at very different levels - they said they keep work folders for kids that are ahead (but it sounded a lot like worksheet busy work.) But, there are work stations, and a lot of movement around the room - no desks. The kindergarten room definitely feels more similar to montessori than a structured 1st grade classroom. And Montessori has lots of freedoms that he'll lose when he moves to public - like being able to choose his work, and to go to the bathroom whenever he needs to, and being able to work inside or out - which again, might be easier to figure out in K than in first.

So we are agonizing over this. I'd love to hear an update on what people decided!

Also - We are in DeKalb County, but were not happy with the public montessori option when we visited (we looked at Briar Vista.) We LOVED City Schools of Decatur, but can't afford to move, and they're not accepting tuition students for K this year. So I think we're going to have to settle on our decent, not great elementary, which we liked alright.

Hi all. We have daycare set up but are interested in a possible nanny share with our 2 month old son. We don't have a nanny yet but are curious to know if anyone else is interested in going in together on one. We live in Avondale Estates. We'd be looking at probably M-F, starting between 6-7:30a and ending 4:30-5:30p. We'd be willing to do it at either our house or whoever we are sharing with (or alternate). We do have a dog/cats. We're looking to start probably the last week of February or beginning of March when he will be 12 weeks old. (I go back to work on 3/4). We are hoping to stay at $900 or less per month for our share.

If you're interested, please let us know! jhatchermartin@gmail.com
