About Decatur Mom

This web log is about my experiences with moving to Decatur, GA and raising two young children in the City of Decatur. It all started two years ago. With my newborn in one arm, pushing my two-year old in a baby swing with the other, we got acquainted with this wonderful children’s park at the corner of Northern and Nelson Ferry Road. While I took note of the well-kept green space and toddler-friendly play equipment and toys, I was greeted by many friendly faces and the smell of good things to eat from nearby restaurants.

Quaint bungalows lined the street leading up to the park from the West. Local shops filled the streets from the East. And the Decatur First Christian Church stood in the center as beautiful symbol of what the City of Decatur has to offer; a diverse community with a unique, urban and family friendly culture.

Ok, so maybe the neighborhood is not as perfect as I just described. After all, we were all pretty weary from house-hunting that day. I had just about given up, my husband wanted to press on, the kids wanted out of the car and the park looked like an oasis.

I stayed with the kids while my husband went to check out the neighborhood…he didn’t get far. There was a house for sale by owner across the street from the park. “Across the street from THIS park, you’re kidding!” A small bungalow zoned for Oakhurst Elementary, Renfroe Middle and Decatur High. It was nearly half the size and twice as much as the house we were moving from in a South Atlanta suburb. “We’ll take it!”

Having moved here from San Francisco, CA a couple of years earlier, we were used to smaller dwellings in great neighborhoods and we longed for an opportunity to live in a place where we could walk to our favorite hang-outs and spend lots of time outdoors.

That was the day we decided to make Decatur, GA our home.

Two years later we still love it! Watching our children learn, play and grow here has been an amazing experience in motherhood, so much so that I started this blog! I hope to use it share my adventures in raising two young children in the City of Decatur by telling you about fun places to go, great places to eat, events not to miss, educational opportunities, and all the kiddie stuff in between. In return, I hope that other moms, dads, grandparents and friends will share ideas and feedback on activities in the City of Decatur with me.

Yours truly,

Tumara a.k.a. Decatur Mom

    Hi Tumara,

    I wanted all the Decatur Mom’s to know of my store for all the Decatur Dads. With Father’s Day fast approaching and Decatur Mom’s busy schedules, they can pop in and get something for their children’s Dad. I have free parking as well, if it isn’t walkable, and carry all sorts of affordable and casual clothing, accessories and gifts tailored to the men of Decatur. My store is Whit’s End at 431 West Ponce in downtown right next to the Dancing Goats Coffee Bar. Thanks, Jeff (a Decatur Dad)

    Whit’s End also has a blog about events, sales, etc. Many of our shoppers are women purchasing for the guys in their lives. I also have many women shoppers who prefer to wear the type of clothing I carry. I have the locally owned Yuckboy line of tees for guys and boys. I love all these Decatur blogs, and am thankful to be included, as I too am a Decatur resident as well as shop owner.

    Hi Tumara–

    What a great blog! I wanted you and your readers to be aware of a special event Mingei World Arts (right next to Javamonkey on Church) is sponsoring with the Georgia Center for the Book at the Decatur Library at 7:15pm on July 29. Carmen Deedy and John McCutcheon will appear with story and song as a benefit for a library we are helping create in one of the carving villages we work with in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. The event is free, but we are asking everyone to consider donating to the library project! We also will be selling figures of reading animals and people reading that we have commissioned from the carvers of the village. A percentage of sales of those carvings will also go to the library project. We will continue to carry the figures to provide ongoing support for the library. There is more detail on our website (which is in progress, but the home page does have some information-): http://www.mingeiworldarts.com

  15. Hi Tumara,
    I love your website. As a young mom new to Decatur and a new business, it is awesome to have a site to turn to for info. My husband and I have 2 little boys and we moved to Decatur last month. We have opened a studio in our home right here in Decatur. I would love it if you would check it out, maybe visit us, and maybe add it to your website. We are looking for new clients and would love to share our website with others. We also are a part of a non-profit organization called Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. It’s an organization that assists families with early infant loss, by photographing their children wither before or after they pass away. It’s a wonderful organization to share with others.

    While planning our son’s 4th birthday party I found an artical from the Wilmington, NC newspaper. The wrighter suggest an “Operation No Goody Bags” revolution. (http://www.starnewsonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061030/NEWS/610300302/1051) We are going to join the revolution, and you agree with the artical it would be nice to spread the word around Decatur.

  23. Dora says:

    Yeah Steve Bloom. I’m sick of goody bags at kids parties; mostly because they are full of junk that breaks in 10 minutes. Parents if you must feel like every kid is having a special day ( please !) how about a brown paper bag with some twizzlers and leave it at that. Decatur is great for kids; until they have to go to elementary and middle school. Then, not so great. Also want to sound off on hysterical parents that won’t let their kids outside without secret service protection and a GPS device. Things are not worse than they were when you were kids. Your parents just didn’t have streaming natiional and international headlines on their computers.

    I love your site. I have bookmarked it. We have two boys and I love Decatur. My oop friends get sick of me extolling the perfect family/funky/friendly Decatur vibe. I love it that we can go to a restaurant and sit with folks of every hue, age, family arrangement and orientation. Best of all, no one is too dressed up. Our neighbors talk to each other, the kids heard together like a raggedy wild tribe, and all our dogs sniff each other. My children go to Arbor Montessori school. I am hoping to send them to Decatur High School. I’d love to hear any discussion about the school from parents of high schoolers.

  27. Hi, Tumara!

    To Jennifer—

    About City Schools of Decatur…..the schools here are great. Our son is now in 10th grade and began at CSD in 3rd grade at Glennwood when it was a regular elementary school. Of course, like any system there are a few issues, but overall we have been extremely pleased. But, that’s why our taxes are high, b/c are schools are good. Decatur High just got ranked by Newsweek in the top 5% of all public high schools in the USA. Our SAT scores always rank very high. The diversity of the schools properly prepare your child for the real world.

  34. Susie says:

    Hi Everyone- I found this website looking for more information on raising a family in Decatur, GA. My husband and I are new to the area. We have two boys (2yrs and 11months) and we have heard wonderful things about Decatur. I just wanted to see if anyone who lives there with kids could answer some questions for me. Which Elementary schools should we look for? (for buying a home) Are there parks or YMCA’s with sports leagues for kids? Is there anything that is considered a “negative” to raising a family here? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
    Susie

  35. Jeff says:

    Susie,

    All the schools are great. Lots of YMCA programs, and local programs through the Decatur Recreation. Nothing I know of negative about Decatur. Good luck!

  36. Daniella says:

    Hi Decaturmom and future neighbors!

    My family and I moved to the Atlanta area a few months ago and are buying a house in Decatur. We’ll be moving into the neighborhood in mid-December (we’re currently in corporate housing in midtown).

    We’re having no luck in finding childcare for our 19 month old. She’s at a place in midtown about which we are far from thrilled. Every place we’ve looked has a horrific waiting list.

    Does anyone have any recommendations for childcare that could take us sooner than next Fall – perhaps an in-home or smaller place that’s flying under the radar?

    Thanks in advance!

  37. decaturmom says:

    Hi Daniella,

    I hope that you are excited about moving to Dectaur. It is a wonderful place to raise children. And I hope that you and your family have a smooth transition.

    Because Decatur is such a great place to raise children, there are a lot of families with children here. Hence the long, long waiting lists at the vast majority of childcare centers that you have already spoken with in the area. However, if you have some flexibility with your child care options, I don’t think that you should be discouraged.

    I know many families in the area that use alternatives to day care such as nanny care and nanny share (and so do we.) Decatur is a nice place for in home care due to the easy access to great parks, libraries and book stores for children, jumping gyms, art classes, dance classes, foreign language classes, and the Decatur YMCA.

    Also, finding an in home caregiver doesn’t have to be as daunting of a task as it may sound. In fact, I plan to write an article about it pretty soon. In the mean time, if you want to send me an email I can send you some direct links to sources that we have used in the past to set up in home child care.

    Best of luck to you!

    Warm regards,

    Tumara

  38. decaturmom says:

    Hi Susan,

    Welcome to Decatur! I hope that you and your family are settling in well. And if you are starting to look into elementary schools, you will probably want to check out this web site: http://www.decatur-city.k12.ga.us/ It gives an overview of all of the City of Decatur schools including elementary which are all excellent, BTW. As far as YMCA options, the Decatur YMCA is wonderful. Our children have been in programs there for the past two years and they love it. They’ve done everything from swimming to t-ball, to gymnastics. You can find out more information here: http://www.ymcaatlanta.org/Branches/DDY-Decatur_Dekalb_YMCA/default.asp Also, the Decatur YMCA has mommy and me classes as well as classes for children as young as two, who can stay in class without a parent or caregiver. Decatur also has a recreation center that has sports and other enrichment programs, however they take children that are bit older, usually around elementary school age. You can find out more about the Decatur rec here: http://www.decaturga.com/cgs_citysvcs_childrensservices.aspx

    Best of luck to you and your family!

    Warm regards,

    Tumara

    Thought I would let you know what is going on at Wiggle this Saturday.

    Cloth Diaper Day at Wiggle – 1-4pm

    Do you know the difference between prefolds, inserts and one size cloth diapers? What about organic cotton, hemp, or bamboo? Do the names BumGenius, Kissaluvas, Llamajamas or Knickernappies mean anything to you?

    If you are already confused, don’t worry! Come to our cloth diaper day in and you will learn more in one afternoon than days of internet research. Wiggle is excited to have the owner of a locally based online site called Emi Beans on hand to educate us all on the numerous brands and options for cloth diapering! Check out samples and get discounts on future orders!

    We will also be joined by one of our favorite doulas and hypnobirthing instructors, Kelly Hightower, who can answer cloth diapering questions and any other questions you may have about hypnobirthing or childbirth.

    A Wiggle special event would not be wiggle worthy without some clothing discounts – so stop by anytime this weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and get 20% off select Easter outfits for boys and girls!

    Hi,
    I’ve also noticed many nanny-share requests. I’m scrambling to find full time nanny services for my baby boy for August 09. He’ll be 7.5 months when I return to work, and I’d love to find other like minded families to possibly share nanny services. Or if anyone has suggestions for daycare, please let me know as I didn’t realize that one had to get on waiting lists while pregnant! If anyone is interested in looking into nanny share possibilities with me, please call 404 549 7615. Thank you!

  51. decaturmom says:

    Hi,

    To all who have commented about finding nanny share options I hear you loud and clear. There are a number of good resources out there to find nannies, but I haven’t really found a resource where you can find your nanny and a potential family to share the nanny with. My advice would be to find a good nanny candidate first, make sure that person you are considering hiring would be open to a nanny share, and then start searching for a family in need of nanny share. The drawback is that you may need to do all of the upfront screening and incur those costs (if there are any.) However, having two families vet out a nanny is likely to take twice as long and many times time is a factor.

    Once you do find a potential nanny and you are looking for a family to share, you have a few more things to consider. Will you split the nannies time? Meaning, will the nanny be at your house caring for your child on M, W, F and at the other families house on T and Thurs? If so, then it is not necessarily important for both families to have the same goals and expectations for the nannies duties. However, if the nanny will watch children from both families at the same time, it is very important to make sure that the expectations between families are similar and clearly communicated to the nanny.

    Over the next couple of weeks, I am going to compile all of the nanny-finding resources that I have used over the past 3 years and share those in an article. I’m also looking into creating either space on this site or building another site where families can connect about nanny-sharing. I just need to make sure that if people need to share personal contact information that they can do so somewhat securely.

    Thanks for all of your comments!

  52. Noel says:

    Any recommendations for daycare for an infant? We ideally would like a nanny-share but in the meantime, I imagine I might have to put my name on a lists of local daycares just in case I can’t find a nannyshare.
    Thanks!

    Bring your kids to flamenco dance class this July 9-30 at Several Dancers Core. I’ll teach the class on Thursdays at 6-7 PM, to boys and girls age 6-12. We’ll swirl skirts, stomp feet and speak in Spanish, while listening to music that broadens cultural awareness. Younger kids will have their own class starting this fall. And, yes, there’s class for adults as well. Details: http://www.flamencoclasses.com/classes.html.

    SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Nestle’s U.S. baking division said on Friday that it was voluntarily recalling its Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned of the risk of contamination with E. coli bacteria.

    Nestle said the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were investigating reports of illnesses caused by E. coli O157:H7 in consumers who also reported having eaten raw cookie dough. E. coli can cause abdominal cramping, vomiting and diarrhea, the FDA said.

    Since March, the FDA said, there have been 66 reports of illness across 28 states. Twenty-five people were hospitalized, according to the FDA, and no one has died.

    “We want to strongly advise consumers that raw cookie dough should not be eaten,” Nestle said in a statement. “This message also appears prominently on our packaging.”

    Nestle said the products involved in the recall included all varieties of Nestle Toll House refrigerated Cookie Bar Dough, Cookie Dough Tub, Cookie Dough Tube, Limited Edition Cookie Dough items, Seasonal Cookie Dough and Ultimates Cookie Bar Dough.

    The FDA advised consumers to throw the products away. It said cooking the dough was not recommended because consumers might get the bacteria on their hands and cooking surfaces.

  61. Jeff says:

    Wow, I’m glad that I found this blog. I am considering moving my family to Decatur from the north burbs. The schools seem decent (CoD), and the area is definitely on the way up. Plus, I would not be spending so much of my day in traffic. My question is: how many children are there around? Are there enough for spontaneous play, or do play dates have to be arranged? I don’t want my son to be the only kid in a neighborhood full of DINKs.

    • COD is a very very family focused community…very. There are children everywhere. What’s a DINK? Re: if you son will be surrounded by them…it all depends on where in the city you move to just like everywhere else. Be prepared – you’re not going to get as much house for your money as you are in the surburbs…I’m sure you already figured that out if your considering moving here. And don’t forgot to do some research on taxes. City of Decatur is it’s own entity therefore has it’s own tax system.

  62. Jeff says:

    Lynne,

    I did not mean any offense. DINK is an acronym for Dual Income, No Kids. I only asked because I wanted to be sure that my son would not be the only young child in the neighborhood.

    After I commented, I found out that a co-worker with two young sons lives there and that his family loves it. He said there are lots of families with children moving in. Your comment about CoD being very family focused backs this up.

  63. Jen says:

    Jeff… this City is polluted with kids. The pre and elementary schools are full to bursting due to an influx. If you haven’t been here in May/Sept for the concerts in the square or 4th of July… you haven’t been to ATL’s version of mayberry… well, with a higher education and social conscious. Bring it and prepare to get involved. It’s inevitable.

    • Jeff says:

      Polluted? Surely you jest. Isn’t this influx of upper middle class families a big reason why City of Decatur property values haven’t fallen off of the face of the Earth like everywhere else?

  64. Jen says:

    Actually its the quality of the schools and the lower crime rate compared to intown neighborhoods– as you mentioned before which maintains the higher values (due to demand from families of all classes), as well as the dedication of the population to maintain growth in the face of a decline. But suffice it to say… your dear boy will have many pals… as long as he doesn’t mince words.. and doesn’t mind diversity.

    Hi Tumara,
    I am thrilled that I found your blog. I will be moving to Decatur from FL in October with my husband and 13 month old son. I am desperate for any daycare center suggestions? Where we live currently, there are no waiting lists and enrollment is all year long. I am finding that this is not how it works in Decatur. Any suggestions? We look forward to moving to Decatur, the area is beautiful, and your site certainly presents Decatur as the PERFECT place for kids. Thank you!

  72. Sara Speert says:

    Tumara,

    Thanks for putting so much time and effort into creating this great blog and keeping it going. I know that it’s a fantastic resource for all Decatur families.

    I wanted to let you know about a really fun event we’re hosting on October 24th, 2009.

    Join us at the park… dance among the trees, twirl in the grass, bring a picnic and enjoy a beautiful day while Sara Speert Photography photographs stunning images of your family.

    Just in time for the holidays, we are hosting the 3rd annual Portrait Day. It’s a day of mini-portrait sessions where I will be photographing fun, natural and artistic portraits of families and kids.

    For more information, visit the website – http://www.saraphotography.com/portraitday. We’d love if you could include an announcement about this great event on an upcoming post. The deadline for registering is October 7th.

  73. Hi Tamura,

    Thanks for providing a great resource to families in the Decatur area! I’m a native Snellvillian, and my friends are always looking for things to do with their children around town; your suggestions and finds are certainly appreciated.

    I noticed your post about the Decatur Book Festival, and I wanted to let you know about an upcoming book drive to benefit Reach Out and Read at The Wiggles concert on November 8th.

    The Wiggles support Reach Out and Read, and they’re asking local families to join them by bringing a new children’s board book to The Wiggles Go Bananas! Live concert at the Gwinnett Area on November 8th. Reach Out and Read is a nationwide nonprofit early literacy program that gives free books to young children in need through their pediatricians. All books collected will go to Reach Out and Read Programs in the Greater Atlanta area (we have three locations in Decatur).

    For more information about the concert and book drive, visit http://www.reachoutandread.org or http://www.thewiggles.com.

    Obviously,the concert isn’t in Decatur, but we’re really excited about the book drive and we’re hoping to spread the word any way we can to encourage families to bring in books.

    Thanks for your help!
    Best,
    Carolyn

    Hi Tumara,

    I’m a local father to a 3 year old daughter. Last fall, we tried a toddler soccer program and found it a little choatic – too many kids, not enough coaching staff, not enough personal attention. After hearing the same thing from many parents, and since I am a licensed soccer coach and former pro soccer player, I decided to offer a toddler soccer program with a different approach.

    Starting April 10, I will be coaching small age-appropriate groups of kids, so I can maximize the fun and personal attention each child receives. Sessions will be held at Mason Mill Park.

      Kathy- you can check out the tax rates on various properties by looking at the site http://www.decaturga.com/cgs_citysvcs_atr_taxesandfees.aspx — I think you search by address. The DeKalb county website will give you the relevant county taxes for Decatur properties.

      The area is awesome, whether you live in city of Decatur or in unincorporated Dekalb (just outside). I think teens love the neighborhood – it’s easy to get around (even without a car) and lots to do.

      • Kathy says:

        Thanks – my husband is currently looking for a home for us and soon we hope to be there. My youngest son is looking forward to attending Decatur High. It seems like a very family, community oriented neighborhood – just what we are looking for!

    ABOUT OCP: Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool (OCP) is a nonprofit, parent-teacher
    cooperative established in 2005. The school was founded with the goal of
    creating an ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse community that is
    united through its commitment to parental involvement in education. We’re also
    one of the first schools in Atlanta to institute and live by a strong commitment
    to a holistic (three pronged) approach to environmental education.

    We do this through our a. curriculum, b. classroom and community environment and
    c. outreach to the greater community (For instance, we strive to create green
    events with a small environmental footprint, especially emphasizing our
    commitment to supporting the local and craft business communities).

    Its student body has close ties with many area neighborhoods, such as Candler
    Park, Lake Claire, Druid Hills, Inman Park, Kirkwood, Oakhurst, and Winnona
    Park.

    Hello Tumara!

    My name is Tiffany and I am a freelance journalist. Recently… I’ve become interested in the Montessori vs. Public school debate when my sister was making a decision on my 3-year-old nephew.

    It is still a popular topic amongst parents, and a trending one at that. However, I am more interested in the child’s ability to transition into public school after leaving Montessori, especially the transition with older children.

    I found your blog via Google. The question you posed regarding Montessori school made me realize the story behind a student’s transition from one education system into a totally different philosophy of education.

    I would love to discuss the decision you made with your kids. If it’s possible, could you email me at: t-walden@northwestern.edu. Also… if you know any other parents (or anyone reading this comment) who have gone through the experience of transitioning their children from Montessori to Public… could you direct them to my email if they are willing to share their experience?

    Thanks for your time!
    Hope to hear from you soon,
    Tiffany

    Hi Tumara,
    I am a fellow Decatur Mom that lives in the ‘kid toy park’ neighborhood. I wanted to share a web app my husband just developed. The Elf Spotter. It’s a place where families can share where their Elf on the Shelf moves to each day and hear or see pictures of where other elves go to in other families homes. Big fun to share and see where those whimsical elves end up when they come back from the North Pole. The app is brand new and free. We would love to see Decatur families share their pictures and write about the places their elf shows up on our web app. The link is http://trackpl.us/elf It works on the iPhone/Android/iPad and computer if you are in Safari or Google Chrome (as that is what smart phones use)

    Happy Holidays

    Parents – join us at Firehouse Guitars & Music Decatur for our winter semester of WeeJam, a musical foundation class for 0-6 year olds! We had a great time this fall at our Saturday classes are now adding a Wednesday morning class as well.

    About WeeJam
    Children have an innate ability to pick up music “language” at a very young age – as we get older, much like with a spoken language, it gets harder to develop this ear. WeeJam gives your child the “ABCs” of the music language providing them with the tools to:
    * Sing in key
    * Keep accurate rhythm
    * Develop an ear for tonal & rhythmic patterns
    * Experience a variety of different musical instruments
    * Participate in a community musical environment
    * Enjoy music for life!
    WeeJam is mixed age allowing families with small children to bond over music together, without having to take kids to different classes. Having a music store as a background for the class also allows us to introduce kids to a larger variety of instruments than in more traditional classes. And, WeeJam uses “kids” music that appeals to adults and work in “adult” music that appeals to kids making it fun for everyone.

    WeeJam Winter Schedule & Costs
    Our winter session lasts 8 weeks and will be held at Firehouse Guitars & Music Decatur at the following times:
    Wednesdays from 10-10:45am (1st class Jan. 5th)
    Saturdays from 9-9:45am (1st class Jan. 8th)
    Saturdays from 10-10:45am (1st class Jan. 8th) – FULL (waitlist only)

    The cost is $130 for an individual child, and $65 for each additional sibling.

    To reserve your spot simply stop into the store, call us at 404-929-0012 or go to http://bit.ly/9gpFt4 to sign up online. (Note: to reserve a spot online without using PayPal you can choose “Pay by Mail” and pay by phone or in store within the week.)

    If you have additional questions on WeeJam or the benefits of musical exposure at a young age email lori.murphy@guitarsatlanta.com for more information. Firehouse Guitars & Music is located at 2520 N Decatur Rd at the intersection of Scott Blvd and Medlock. We hope to see you in January!

  111. Decatur parents would love to know about this…

    Hi there,

    I’m a parent of a wee student (Jack, 3) of the Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool.

    I really *really* really think our school is something unusual and special. My very shy son even adores it there. The teachers are caring and smart and the location is quaint and looks like something straight out of Hansel and Gretel :)

    So I’m hoping you can help me spread the word about our upcoming year. Back last year, I only heard about our school via word of mouth and basically – I wish someone in the media had talked about OCP back when I was looking for schools.

    We have some fun information sessions coming up, where other parents can find out more about OCP. I love this blog and would be honored if you could help us get the word out.

    Thanks and Happy New Year!!

    Here’s the press release about OCP:

    ***********

    Come explore what Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool can offer your family!

    Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool will be hosting enrollment information sessions for the 2011 – 2012 school year in January and February.  Located at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany at the corner of Ponce de Leon Avenue and East Lake Drive, OCP provides a secular education to children in the Decatur and Atlanta areas.  OCP uses a unique nature-based curriculum that has its roots in Waldorf and Reggio Emilia.  Our curriculum embraces nature walks, simple all-natural toys when possible, and the celebration of the seasons.  Children receive a hands-on environmental education every day.

    OCP accepts children aged 2 – 4 years for morning classes grouped by age.  Children must be 2 by September 1, 2011 to attend.  Classes are taught by well-qualified teachers with expertise in early childhood education who are supervised by our experienced director.  Parents serve as assistant teachers in the classroom on a rotating basis.

    As a cooperative preschool, OCP is entirely parent-run.   Parents make up the Board of Directors and serve on committees that operate the school.  When a member family joins OCP, it becomes part of a community, not just part of a preschool.

    OCP will be holding enrollment information sessions at the following times:
    • Saturday, January 8 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
    • Tuesday, January 25 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
    • Saturday, February 5 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
    Attendance at one of the enrollment information sessions is a required component of the admissions process.  For additional information, please visit http://www.oakhurstcoop.com or e-mail admissions@oakhurstcoop.com with any questions.

    I am looking for a nanny/nanny share or a stay at home mommy (with young children that wants to make some extra money) 1 day a week from 7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Pay is $15/hour. Tuesdays are ideal. Our house is located in East Lake. Although we don’t feel comfortable with people driving our boys (3 years and 17 months)- our front yard is literally a park where neighborhood children play- so you won’t get bored! If you have young children you are welcome to bring them. That’s what our last nanny did (she was with us for over 3 years) and it was great! If interested contact us at jjdevineuga@aol.com or 770-547-1400.

    Thanks,

  116. As a Decatur mom, I wanted to share a wonderful summer camp available for preschoolers located just down the road, Inman Park Cooperative Preschool’s Summer in the City. This will mark the third summer that I’ve sent my daughter here… and our experience was so positive that first year, we have been attending IPCP full-time. For those that find the curriculum appealing but are unsure of the co-op investment, this is a great way for you to test out the school without the usual co-op obligations.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Summer is on its way and Inman Park Cooperative Preschool (IPCP) is excited to offer Nature in the City Summer Camp 2011! Our beautiful campus includes a certified National Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitat with a smaller outdoor garden space for our younger campers (ages 1 and 2).
    During our camp sessions (which start June 6 and run for two weeks, through July 29), children will engage in individual and group projects and experiences where they will see, hear, touch and even taste nuture, all while developing a lifelong love of the outdoors. Each week, a special guest will visit IPCP to enhance the session’s theme.
    IPCP’s Nature in the City Summer Camp will bring your child a summer full of exploration, fun and friendship. Visit ipcp.org for more information. Many thanks.
    builds up in the bloodstream and causes severe neurological complications. Standard treatment consists of a
    research is needed to ease the difficulty of the diet and to help improve the quantity of life for all individuals living
  118. SPA SERVICES
    I hear about your blog from a client… I have been in Decatur for amost 4 years and I still feel like a little lost sometimes… with all this useful information your blog is awsome.
    I am a former esthetitian of Natural Body spa where I worked for long time. I am having really hard time going back to work because I dont want to leave my 2 years old. So I decided to set up an spa room at home and I have been doing aesthetics, mostly waxing for now. I am exclusively oriented to serve “Moms”.
    In regular spa settings, moms are not allowed to bring their children so as a result, mom never gets her services done. I set up an space at home where two rooms are connected. In one I perform my spa service, while mom can watch her little one in the other room playing. The playroom is set up to be childproof. It has a lot of toys and also a resting area where kids can take nap if they need.
    I am a mom too, so my hours are flexible and I work better with apointments made in the moment rather than with days in advance. If any mom needs a spa service, she can contact me at paola_covarrubias@yahoo.com or call me at 678 8876047. For eyebrows, leg waxing, lash or brow tinting, or to get that bikini ready for the beach! (I do brazilians too). Thank you for sharing this information!
    Hello Tumara,
    I just purchased a home in Decatur last month. I’m up late researching summer camps in the area and somehow came upon your website. I think the concept is awesome. I am the mom of 2 boys ages 6 & 4. My husband and I have been in planning mode to find and buy a home in Decatur for the last 3 years, and boy are we glad to have reached the finish line. I am a teacher and Realtor, hoping to go back to doing real estate full time now that my boys are older and will be attending Decatur Schools. I am starting up my own real estate company to allow me the flexability to schedule around my children’s school schedule. I was fortunate to be my own Real Estate Agent during our search, so having my children along was not a problem. However, this can be a challenge for many families when scheduling home showings. I hope find ways to make the process easier and more kid friendly for families. I’ll definitely keep up with your blog to find and share info. as my Decatur adventures progress. Thanks Again!
