Children’s Book Festival in Decatur, GA

The Decatur Book Festival is almost here! The Decatur Book Festival is a free event in Decatur, Georgia over Labor Day weekend, August 29th, 30th and 31st where hundreds of authors and book lovers gather on the Decatur Square for a literary festival like no other that I have ever attended. Between the readings, book signings, book sales and music there is something for everyone at this family-friendly event.

One of the highlights of the Decatur Book Festival for the small ones in the crowd is the Children’s Book Festival which kicks off with a children’s parade on Saturday morning at the corner of Commerce and Clairemont. Click here for more details. Other awesome events for children include the children’s stage where nearly 30 children’s book authors will give readings and performances.

I was excited to see that one of our FAVORITE storytellers, Rob Cleveland, is scheduled to perform on the children’s stage on Sunday from 4:30 – 5p.m. We have lots of his books and have seen quite a few of Mr. Cleveland’s entertaining performances. His books and stories are centered around old folk tales from around the world, and with his amazing art for storytelling you always feel as if you are going on a journey to meet new and interesting characters and watch them learn important life lessons. You can see some of Rob Cleveland’s stories brought to life with animated characters at Story Cove.

This year, the Children’s Book Festival will also feature activities for older children and teens including special events for Harry Potter fans. Decatur Metro has the scoop on all of the Harry Potter activities that are scheduled for the Children’s Book Festival including a Harry Potter quiz show. So, whether you have tots, teens or tweens the Decatur Book Festival makes for a great Labor Day weekend destination.

Parent tip: I remember from the last couple of years that the level of activity at the festival was so high that it was a little overwhelming with kids…trying to navigate the crowd, participate in all of the fun activities and make sure that we didn’t miss any of our favorite authors’ performances. To avoid DBF overload plan ahead, especially if you need to work around nap time. You can check the full schedule of events here.
