The City of Decatur has planned a number of Independence Day events that are fun for the whole family. For starters, you can decorate your bike, trike, wagon, stroller or simply skip through downtown Decatur in the 4th of July Pied Piper parade. If you are really creative, you can even make a float. Then, line up at First Baptist Church (308 Clairemont Ave.) at 5:30 p.m. The parade starts at 6 p.m. and ends at the Decatur Square Bandstand with a presentation of colors. The Callonwolde Concert Band will be performing on the Bandstand at 7 p.m. Fireworks start around 9 p.m.
If you want to be a little further from the fireworks action you can grab your blankets and enjoy cookies and lemonade on the lawn of First Christian Church of Decatur (601 W. Ponce de Leon). The large sloped lawn sits on the corner of Ponce de Leon facing downtown Decatur. It provides a great view of the fireworks from a distance making it good alternative to the Square for children with sensitive ears. In fact, one of ours was so comfy that he fell asleep.
Are you excited yet? Well, there’s more! On July 4th, 5th and 6th many of your favorite Decatur shop owners will participate in the Annual City of Decatur Sidewalk Sale. Look for red, white and blue ballons flying from storefronts all around Decatur. Some of the participating children’s stores include:
• Hoopla – 414 Church St., 404-371-9485
• Little Shop of Stories – 133-A E. Court Sq., 404-373-6300
• McDonough Street Market & Jake’s Ice Cream – 515 N. McDonough St., 404-373-6300
• Salon Red Kids – 123 E. Ponce de Leon Ave., 404-373-2003
• Wiggle – 305 E. College Ave., 404-373-2522
Here is a neat postcard from the City of Decatur web site that lists all of the participating stores.
I hope you have a safe and fun holiday weekend!
